The first episode used to run on a little engine of its own, built before the rest of the valley existed. Now A Single Spark plays just like the five episodes after it: the same goal card at the top, the same train card at the bottom, and the same job sheet that shows the way on the map before you send the train.
It still opens like a film. The engine wakes in the dark tunnel and rolls out to the Hearth. Then the first job is waiting: one Ember, for Riverglen.

The Signal Cabin finally has its job. While it sleeps, the train stops at every signal, and the driver climbs down and walks over to pull the lever by hand. Bring the cabin its Ember and the signalman takes over: the arms rise as the train comes, and the lamps along the line light up one by one.

The eight crates the Hearth kept for Riverglen's station now leave their pile one at a time. They float into two coaches and then onto the platform, where each one unpacks into a bench, a planter or a lamp. Mira's letter waits on the Letters board too. Whistle as you pass the station, and the children get their bench by the crossing.

When the last goal is done, the view draws back over the valley. The mist lifts from the forest, where the Logging Camp waits for your next Ember.
